Sans avant son combat

MEGALOVANIA (/ˌmɛ.ɡə.loʊ.ˈveɪ.ni.ə/) est la 100e piste de la Bande Originale d'UNDERTALE. C'est un morceau au rythme rapide qui se joue pendant le combat final contre Sans en Route Génocide. Contrairement à presque tout le reste de la bande originale, MEGALOVANIA ne contient pas de leitmotiv des autres pistes de la BO.

Étymologie

Le mot "Megalovania" est une combinaison des mots "Megalomania" ("Mégalomanie") et "Transylvania ("Transilvanie")."

"Megalomania" est le thème des boss du jeu Live A Live, qui a servi d'inspiration pour "Megalovania." Même si Megalovania ne cite pas directement la mélodie de Megalomania, elle possède une structure proche et renvoie un sentiment similaire. Dans la vraie vie, la mégalomanie est l'illusion d'être beaucoup plus important et puissant qu'on ne l'est réellement. Le mot Transylvanie a été ajouté au nom pour lui donner une connotation rappelant Halloween.[1]

Histoire

Avant Undertale

"Megalovania" était originellement composé pour le hack d'EarthBound de Toby Fox intitulé "Radiation's Halloween Hack" qui était une contribution au Halloween Funfest 2008 de Starmen.Net.[2][3][4]

"Radiation's Halloween Hack" portait sur un univers parrelèle d'EarthBound où les quatres élus ne revenirent jamais, ou plus simplement un "mauvais ROM-hack avec des jurons."[5] Selon "The Making of Radiation's Halloween Hack," le morceau Megalomanía de Live A Live était originellement prévu pour être utilisé comme le thème du boss final mais Toby Fox n'a jamais pris le temps de le faire, alors il a "crié tout ce qui lui passait par la tête dans un micro et l'a retranscrit", créant ainsi "Megalovania".[6] Toby Fox a également déclaré que Megalovania était également inspiré par la version SNES/SFC de "Gadobadorrer" de Brandish 2: The Planet Buster, d'où le protagoniste du hack est originaire.[7]

Megalovania sera ensuite réutilisée dans le webcomic Homestuck, en tant que MeGaLoVania dans l'album Homestuck Vol. 6: Heir Transparent avec des guitares de Joren "Tensei" de Bruin. Cette version fait une brève apparence dans le Trickster Mode de "[S] Past Karkat: Wake up." puis une apparence complète dans "[S] Wake." Le leitmotiv de cette musique est réutilisé dans plusieurs autres pistes de la BO d'Homestuck, par exemple dans quelques morceaux de l'album d'AlterniaBound de Toby Fox : The Blind Prophet, She's a Sp8der, et FIDUSPAWN, GO! contiennent toutes les trois le leitmotiv. Ascend, d'un album ultérieur contient également ce leitmotiv.

Il a été mentionné dans une interview de Toby Fox, qu'il s'agit de l'un des morceaux initialement composés pour d'autres projets. Les autres étants Fallen Down, Ghost Fight, Heartache, sans., Nyeh Heh Heh!, Bonetrousle et Another Medium.[8][9]

Après Undertale

Après son apparition dans Undertale, un remix de la version d'Undertale est apparu dans Super Smash Bros. Ultimate en tant que DLC payant avec la Tenue de Sans pour 0,80 € sorti le 5 Septembre 2019. Cette version utilise également brièvement les leitmotivs de Heartache et Bonetrousle. Elle est également apparu dans Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun! pour le pack de DLC Undertale de la version Nintendo Switch.

Un remix intitulé Yeah It Is créé par un collègue compositeur sur Homestuck James Roach est sortie le 4 Avril 2020 et inclue plus tard officiellement en tant que thème d'Aradia Megido dans le Volume 8 de Pesterquest.

Un remix appelé Megalovania of the Empty Corse fait une apparition dans Touhou Danmaku Kagura: Phantasia Lost, en tant que seconde collaboration entre Toby et ZUN.

MEGALOVANIA à été joué lors d'une audience générale pour le Pape Francis début 2022 dans le cadre d'un spectacle de cirque.[10] Cet évènement a attiré l'attention des médias.[11]

Anecdotes

  • La version originale de Megalovania du Radiation's Halloween Hack était en La dans une gamme blues mineure, tandis que la version que l'on trouve dans Undertale est une version légèrement plus rapide et modifiée, dans une gamme en Ré mineur.
    • La version d'Undertale corrige également le tempo de l'original, qui comportait de légers changements de tempo dans les quatre premières mesures. Il a été confirmé que Toby Fox a enregistré le Megalovania original sur son ordinateur à l'aide de EBMusEd, au lieu de le créer dans FL Studio.[12]
  • La mère de Toby Fox appelle MEGALOVANIA, "MEGALAVEGALA."[13]
  • Le remix de 2019 de MEGALOVANIA était la première piste de Super Smash Bros. a être distribuée avec un costume de Combattant Mii.
  • Toby Fox a composé une 'suite' a Megalovania intitulée Megalo Strike Back pour l'album I Miss You - EarthBound 2012.[14]
  • Toby Fox a confirmé que Megalovania - Clash with a Doctor, la version du fangame MOTHER "Cognitive Dissonance" (CogDis), n'était pas composée par lui sur son compte Twitter.[15]
  • Pour le remake de Live A Live, le producteur Takashi Tokita ha demandé à Yoko Shimomura de composer "GIGALOMANIA" pour "aller plus loin" que le MEGALOMANIA original, Toby Fox a déclaré par la suite qu'il n'utiliserait pas le nom "GIGALOVANIA."[16]
